COVID-19: Hyderabad jeweller who hosted birthday party, guest die

Hyderabad: At a time when Telangana has emerged as a hotspot for coronavirus among Indian states, the jewellers’ community in Hyderabad is in a state of panic.

A prominent jeweller with a showroom in the Himayatnagar area of Hyderabad died just a couple of days after hosting his birthday party. The panic was widespread as about 100 members of Hyderabad Jewellers’ Association also attended the party. In addition to the host, one of the guests also died after developing severe symptoms of COVID-19, officials said. Health officials believe that the guest was infected by the host and the condition of both deteriorated rapidly.

As the families of the two victims were mourning the tragic turn of events, the other guests were trying to get themselves tested in various city hospitals to find out whether they too were infected.

30% rise in positive cases

Most of the jewellers in Hyderabad are from the close-knit Marwari community, a trading group that has already seen quite a few deaths due to the dreaded virus.

The recent deaths involving the jeweller and one of his guests has come to light at a time when the rate of increase in positive tests in Telangana is nearly 30 per cent — the highest in entire India. It is significantly higher than the national average of 8.3 per cent positive tests.
The number of daily positive cases in Telangana is nearing 2,000 — almost double of last week’s daily average. Last Saturday, the state recorded 1,850 cases, with 1,572 of them in Hyderabad alone.

The dire warning from top health officials of the state that there was a chance of coronavirus infecting the entire state population of Telangana has further fuelled fears.

‘Trend will continue’

Dr G. Srinivas Rao, state coordinator for dealing with coronavirus cases has said that the rate of spread of the pandemic was not unique to Telangana, but it was national and international trend. “This trend will continue and cases will increase,” he cautioned, adding that the good thing was that the state was stepping up testing and ensuring better hospital service and surveillance management.

Both Rao and state Health Minister Estela Rajinder expressed their disappointment over people not following the rules. Hyderabad, in particular, has seen a sharp rise in the number of positive cases because of people gathering in large numbers and attending parties, Rajinder said.

“One person is getting infected and in turn he is infecting a large number of people. This is what is happening in Hyderabad”, the health minister said.
