Dubai: An Indian journalist, who was shot at, in Ghaziabad, near the Indian capital of Delhi, on Monday night, died this morning at a hospital. A CCTV footage, showing the wounded journalist Vikram Joshi lying on the road, as his daughter kneeled by his side, had gone viral on Twitter, yesterday.
On Wednesday morning, the news of his death was shared by Indian tweeps.
Apparently, the attack came just four days after he had lodged a police complaint against some men, for harassing his niece on July 16.
On Monday night at around 10:30pm, when Joshi was travelling on a motorcycle with his two daughters, a group of men assaulted him and opened fire at him. He was later taken to hospital but succumbed to his injury.
Claiming that Joshi paid the price of police incompetence, the family protested at the hospital where he died, and refused to allow his body to be taken for post-mortem.
The state government has announced Rs10 lakh for the family, as compensation.
After his death, a group of journalists also held protests against Joshi's murder.
His death triggered criticism from Twitter users, and several opposition leaders, regarding the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Like many others, Twitter user @gauravvchauhan tweeted: "The government of Uttar P should sack, not [just] suspend all the concerned police officials immediately. Very sad, there is no fear of law left, as culprits think they can manipulate a charge sheet, based on which they will be cleared and bailed from court. Pathetic situation."
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today tweeted: "Vikram Joshi was killed because he protested against his niece's harassment. Condolences to the bereaved family. They promised Ram Rajya (kingdom of the Hindu deity Ram), and delivered Goondaraj (kingdom of goons)."
Nine accused in the case have been arrested, and one man is still on the run, officials said. Two policemen have been suspended.
"Nine people have been arrested including two main accused - Ravi and Chotu. A weapon was also seized from their possession," Kalanidhi Naithani, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad, reportedly said.
