Karachi: The coronavirus emergency has kept the people of Karachi away from the famous coastal strip in its posh Clifton area on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
The Clifton corniche is popular among residents for recreation and picnicking as the city direly lacks recreational areas owing to years of neglect that barred development of amenities and civic facilities.
The Clifton corniche and other beach areas of Karachi also remained shut during Eid Al Fitr earlier this year.
The closure of recreational and entertainment facilities are some of the remaining lockdown measures still in place in the city to curb the spread of COVID-19.
These lockdown measures are still being enforced despite infection rates in the province of Sindh - whose capital is Karachi - has dropped below four per cent. On August 1, the first day of Eid Al Adha in Pakistan, just one COVID-19 passed away in Sindh in the span of 24 hours.
Clifton beach otherwise attracts a large number of revellers each year during Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha. The beach is especially famous among the migrant workers who came to Karachi from northern parts of the country.
Deputy Commissioner of District South of Karachi Irshad Ali Sodhar said police personnel had been deployed to keep people away from the Clifton’s beach.
He said that beach had been shut especially on the occasion of Eid to prevent assembly of large numbers of Karachi residents, as it could pose a serious risk to their health in view of the COVID-19 emergency.
While acknowledging that the infection rate has markedly dropped in the province, he said beach facilities would be opened as soon as there was no danger of second wave of coronavirus infections.
