Hyderabad: With reports of private hospitals fleecing Corona patients continuing unabated, the Telangana government has put 40 such health care institutions on notice and issued a stern warning that if they failed to change their attitude, it will take over 50 per cent of their beds under the Epidemics Act.
State health minister Etala Rajender, reviewing people’s complaint of over charging by private sector hospitals, said, “there are such complaints against almost all the private hospitals and we will deal with them sternly. So far we have received 1,039 complaints of over charging and indiscriminate billing against the private hospitals. The state government has already barred two major private hospitals including Deccan Hospital from treating Corona cases for their exorbitant billing. “Notices have been issued to all such hospitals”, he added.
There were complaints that private hospitals were demanding millions of rupees and at least half a million rupees in advance for admitting such patients. “If we refuse to pay and demand the hospital should follow the government norms in billing, they are simply refusing to admit the patients on the ground that no bed was available”, numerous complainants told government officials.
In some cases they were also refusing to give bills for their payments.
Despite less number of tests compared to other states, Telangana recorded 1,896 positive cases on Monday while 8 fresh deaths were recorded. With this the total number of positive cases in the state reached 82,647 and toll mounted to 645.
