Dubai: A 19-year-old teenager allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl in Greater Noida from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and the accused arrested after a gunfight with police personnel on Thursday. Social media users are outraged with the increase of child and women abuse happening in India since the COVID-19 lockdown.
A Facebook user Chandan commented: "It is very sad to hear such news... almost every day. India has to do something about rapists!!! It's high time!"
The incident took place in Ecotech 3 police station area in Greater Noida on Tuesday afternoon after which a First Information Report was lodged, and the accused was identified and arrested on Wednesday, the officials said.

Talking to the media sources, Deputy Commissioner of Police for women safety, Vrinda Shukla said: "The case was challenging as the accused was wearing a face mask at the time of the crime and there was no eyewitness of the incident. The victim too, had seen the accused for the first time. Police teams turned into action, and the accused was identified.
Another user Suman Rathod posted: “ What's wrong with all these men in India, raping innocent kids.”
She added: "When a police team reached the location of the accused, he tried to run away from the spot. He also opened fire on the team and tried to escape. Further legal proceedings in the case are underway."
While clarifying about the victim's health condition, the officer said she met the minor girl, whose parents are daily wage earners, and she was in a stable condition and getting adequate medical care.

A non-governmental organization in India, Child Rights and You (CRY) that works towards ensuring happier childhoods for all children point outs that the increasing numbers of crimes against children is extremely alarming. It also suggests an increasing trend in reporting.
According to the Indian National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), overall crimes against children has increased steeply over six times in the decade from 2008-2018. From 22,500 cases recorded in 2008 to the numbers of cases have spiked to 1,41,764 in 2018.
