India: Muslim man gets daughters of his ‘Rakhi sister’ married as per Hindu traditions, wins hearts

Dubai: A heartwarming gesture by a Muslim man in the Indian state of Maharashtra has won praises this week, on social media. According to Facebook posts that went viral on Sunday, the Muslim man named Bababhai Pathan from Maharashtra's Ahmednagar helped a Hindu woman’s two daughters get married as per Hindu traditions and customs, using his own money.

Apparently, he did so, because he considered the woman as his own sister. Indian social media users shared news stories about the man from Maharashtra's Ahmednagar.

According to multiple Indian news reports, the woman had lost her husband, a few years ago. The woman, who apparently does not have a real brother, considered Pathan her brother, and, for years she had been celebrating the Indian festival of Raksha Bandhan with him. During Raksha Bandhan, a Rakhi or a traditional bracelet, is given by a girl or woman, to her brother or someone she considers as one, as symbol of protection.

So, on the day of her daughter's wedding, keeping any religious differences aside, Pathan performed the duties of a maternal uncle.

Reportedly, he organised the marriage ceremony with his own savings. He performed all rituals as per Hindu practices, before bidding them goodbye.

Photos shared on Facebook show Pathan crying, and hugging the two daughters as he emotionally bids them goodbye to leave for their new homes.

Indian social media users loved the example of religious harmony set by the man, and applauded him. Many said this was the true spirit of India.
