Age is just a number for this 70-year-old man, who fell in love with a 55-year-old woman, at a hospital in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The two were admitted there for treatment, and as fate would have it, they were allotted beds next to each other. Social media users in India are sharing the story about the “ageless love” of Umrao Singh and Guddibai, who finally got married this weekend, after they were discharged from hospital.
According to Indian news reports, Singh and Gudbuddi were both undergoing treatment at a hospital in the state’s Ashoknagar district. As their beds were next to each other, they soon got talking. It took them just three days to realise that they had fallen in love.
After getting discharged, Umrao Singh took Guddibai to his village in Bhurakhedi, to get ‘permission’ from his four children, and twelve grandchildren, reportedly. However, there was no mention of Guddibai’s family.
The children agreed, and the two got married in front of the entire village. Singh even wore a yellow and gold turban to match his new bride’s wedding clothes.
According to one news report, there was a huge wedding procession where drums were played, and people danced, and showered the couple with gifts. Even Singh’s eldest son danced as he handed over the ‘varmala’ (traditional garland of flowers) to his father.
Facebook user Ipshita Mathur wrote: “Such a beautiful story… there’s no age for falling in love.”
Another user Rakesh Singh said it was good that the couple did not wait to think how they would be judged by the society. “It is inspiring, at a time when some people still decide their path based on ‘what will people think’, these two went ahead and did what their heart told them to do.”
