Pakistan: Chained elephant's health deteriorating fast

Islamabad: The health of Kaavan, the chained and aging elephant at Islamabad Margazar Zoo, is deteriorating and the sooner he is shifted to the elephants’ sanctuary in Cambodia the better according to the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Three internationally recognized vets — Srisaard Channarong and Pratumdee Wichian both from Thailand and Canadian Thomson Darrick Lome — are currently in Pakistan to evaluate the health, food and habitat of the zoo animals, particularly Kaavan to assess whether he is mentally and physically fit for travel.

Detailed medical examination

The three vets, with the support of the local staff, will carry out a detailed medical examination of the animal on Thursday and necessary preparations in this regard have been made.

Dr. Anisur Rahman, Chairman of the IWMB while talking to Gulf News said after the Islamabad High Court’s recent observations and strict notice about the animals health and habitat, nutrition and medication level of the animals has been scaled up, and Kaavan in this regard is the entire zoo team’s top priority.

To a question about relocation of Kaavan, he said, only after Thursday’s medical examination of the elephant, we would be able to tell about the possible date of the elephant’s travel. Fortunately, we have internationally recognized vets among us and they have handled hundreds of such cases before so rest assured, something good will come out of it.

25,000 acre sanctuary

Once he has been given a clearance, Kaavan will be moved to a 25,000 acre sanctuary in Cambodia after 35 years of captivity in Marghazar Zoo, said he.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Wildlife sanctuary in Ghora Gali near Murree is all set to receive two animals from the Islamabad zoo, a black bear and a wolf. Dr. Rahman said currently there are 33 animals left in the zoo that includes monkeys, zebras and others but two of them are being shifted to Murree sanctuary.

In compliance with the direction of IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah, Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) had notified on June 9 an eight-member committee for the relocation of the elephant and other animals of the Marghzar Zoo to other sanctuaries, he said.
