Sindh CM: Local government polls after census is approved

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that local government elections will be held after the results of the country’s last census are approved.

Talking to media persons, Shah said that fresh delimitation of constituencies had to take place before next local government elections in the province.

“The law says that delimitations have to be done on the basis of the latest census,” he said. But before the delimitations, results of the last census in the country in 2017 have to be approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI), the top constitutional forum for resolving power sharing issues between the federation and provinces, he said.

“The results of the 1998 census are no more valid to hold the next local government elections in the province,” he said.

He said that a one-time waiver had been granted in accordance with the Constitution to conduct the general elections of 2018 on the basis of the provisional results of the 2017 census campaign in the country.

He said that once fresh delimitations were completed the local government elections in the province would take place within 120 days as given in the law.

The term of the last elected local government leadership in the province, including Karachi’s mayor Waseem Akhtar, ended on August 30, 2020. In its place the Sindh government has appointed administrators till the next local government polls. The Sindh government has chosen civil servants to be appointed as administrators to head the municipal agencies in the province including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation for the interim period.

The Pakistan Peoples’ Party, the ruling political party of Sindh, has raised reservations about the results of the last census in the country in 2017. It said that the population of the province was deliberately undercounted to deprive it of financial resources from the national revenue pool. The fiscal resources are allocated to the provinces on the basis of their population.
