Hyderabad: A senior Telangana state government official who was allegedly caught accepting bribe money of Rs 12.5 million two months ago, committed suicide in Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda jail.
Prison security guard found former Tahsildar (revenue officer) of Keesara Erva Balaraju Nagaraju hanging with his towel from a window grill in his cell at the jail and was rushed to the jail hospital where doctor declared him dead on arrival.
Anti Corruption Bureau had arrested him along with three others on August 15 while he was accepting Rs 12.5 million rupee as bribe for resolving a 29 acres land dispute in favor of a real estate company. Naaraju had in fact demanded Rs 50 million as bribe and two agents of the company were handing him over the first installment when ACB raided and caught him red handed.
Since then he was in jail awaiting trial. Meanwhile a second case was also booked against him for illegally issuing documents of 48 acres of land to four people. In this second case the ACB had taken him into custody only on Tuesday.
Prison officials say Nagaraju did not leave any suicide note behind but his family members alleged that Nagaraju had ended his life because of the pressure of ACB officials.
