Recently, a 42-year-old man who tried to buy a sports bike from a showroom in Nayagarh district with counterfeit notes was arrested for his unlawful act, in the Indian state of Odisha.
The man was identified as Dibyaranjan Hota, a resident of Kasko community under Khandapada town police limits.
According to the Indian media outlets, Hota enquired about the features of entry-level sports bikes in a showroom, after which he decided to buy a motorcycle worth Rs130,000 (Dh6,483).
Subsequently, the staff of the showroom initiated the paperwork and other formalities for the sale of the vehicle. And when he was asked about the payment mode, he replied: “… cash.”
Talking to the media, police officials said: “The conman confidently handed over the ‘home-made’ notes of Rs 130,000 which were of Rs500 denomination.”
However, the showroom staff was quick to detect the fake notes and informed the police.
Officials said that all notes, except an amount of Rs5000 (Dh250), were fake. Acting swiftly on the complaint, police raided Hota’s rented house, and they seized a computer, printer, half printed currency notes, soiled notes, and other materials used in the printing of counterfeit notes.
The accused has been arrested, and further investigation has been initiated. According to section 489B of the Indian Penal Code, use of any forged or counterfeit currency is a non-bailable offence, and shall be punished with imprisonment of up to 14 years.
