India: Unable to bear work-from-home stress, Gujarat engineer dies by suicide

A 32-year-old engineer in Surat from the Indian state of Gujarat has died by hanging himself, at his residence, after being unable to cope with stress induced by the work-from-home routine on Tuesday.

The man, who has been identified as Jigar Gandhi, was working as an electrical engineer in a Noida-based company for the past three years.

Gandhi had recently returned home from his workplace in the Indian state of Haryana, during the lockdown, and was working from home for the past couple of months.

In the preliminary questioning by police, Gandhi’s family members said that he had been talking often about work pressure during COVID-19 for quite some time.

While confirming the incident, the officials said that the post mortem revealed that he died by hanging.

The Indian National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) recent report states that there is a 70 per cent increase in the number of patients suffering from depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder due to coronavirus.
