Islamabad: The Balochistan government under the Green Bus Project has decided to install a tracker system in passenger buses travelling between Karachi and Quetta on the National Highway.
The decision has been taken in view of an increasing number of accidents due to over-speeding, poor condition of the vehicles and violation of traffic rules.

In the meeting that was chaired by the Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan, it was also decided that private transport companies’ representatives and owners of buses would be approached for installation of this new traffic-friendly system in their buses. The trackers will monitor speed of the coaches and save their data on a specialized system. The meeting also agreed for a complete overhaul of the transport system in the province.
The chief minister also instructed the highway & motorway police to monitor all routes leading in and out of the province.
For this purpose, letters have been dispatched to the federal secretary and the Chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA).
Under the project initially, six big and four small buses will be introduced and on its success more buses will be inducted in the fleet.
Green buses for Quetta
Besides the National Highway, the provincial government has also decided to launch green buses on the intra-city route of Quetta.
Balochistan Minister for Transport Meer Umar Khan Jamali while addressing a press conference said the chief minister of the province has approved a pilot project to launch green bus service on the local route in the provincial capital. Initially, these buses will offer service on two routes of the city.
The district administration of Quetta in this regard would set up bus terminals on two points namely, Joint Road and Airport Road.
The bus service will serve to increase revenue of the transport ministry of Balochistan and Quetta and other cities’ local partners will be offered partnership in this project, said Jamali.
Zero tolerance against unfit vehicles
The transport minister warned the ‘poorly-kept,’ unfit passenger and goods vehicles of strict action. We are going to set up new check-posts in Khuzdar, Hub, Rahni, Zhob, Jaffarabad, and Jhal Magsi route permits of these buses would be examined and they would also undergo thorough checking.
Besides, control rooms would be installed in Quetta’s district administration office as well as the District Headquarters (DHQ) hospitals, he said.
Digitization of route permits system
The minister said the Balochistan government was working on digitization of the route permit system following which the SRS or Static Recharge System will be introduced.
In this regard, the provincial chief minister has already given a go-ahead to fill in the vacant posts in the transport department so that the system could be updated according to international standards.
To a question over illegal activities, he said the government has recently cancelled licences of two private transport companies involved in smuggling of diesel from areas bordering Iran.
