COVID-19: Rs 500 fine for not wearing face masks in Karachi

Karachi: Karachi’s Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani has ordered the imposition of Rs 500 fine on anyone not wearing face masks while outside in view of the rising cases of coronavirus in the city.

The Karachi commissioner asked citizens to wear face masks while outside to ensure their protection against coronavirus.

He asked traders and shopkeepers in the city to turn away customers who are not wearing masks.

He also directed the deputy commissioners posted in districts of the city to take strict penal action against retailers who didn’t observe the government-imposed precautions against the spread of COVID-19.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali while chairing the meeting of provincial Task Force on coronavirus said that all business, social, religious, and educational institutions in the province should strictly implement the government-recommended standard operating procedures (SOPs) against the spread of COVID-19.

The CM said that due observance of these safety precautions had become compulsory as coronavirus cases had been on the rise again in the province.

The CM said that 579 new cases of coronavirus had been detected in Sindh in the previous 24 hours out of total 10,330 COVID-19 tests as the infection rate stood at 5.6 per cent.

He said that during last five days, 25,931 coronavirus tests had been conducted in Karachi alone with detection of 1,932 COVID-19 cases as the infection rate in the city stood at 7.45 per cent.

The CM said that in Hyderabad-the second biggest city of Sindh, 1,577 tests had been conducted during the same time with detection of 144 new COVID-19 cases as the infection rate there stood at 9.13 per cent.

In rest of the province, he said, 22,530 coronavirus tests had been conducted with detection of 416 cases with infection rate of 1.85 per cent.

Daily tests

He asked the officials of Sindh Health Department that the capacity of daily coronavirus tests in the province should be enhanced to 15,000.

The CM said that strict measures had to be taken by the government to overcome the spread of coronavirus cases in view of alarming increase in new COVID-19 cases in the big cities.

He directed the deputy commissioners posted in districts to close down the markets, shopping centres, and shops, which had not been following the government-recommended SOPs.

He said the educational institutions and worship places should also strictly observe the SOPs.

He appealed to the people to wear face masks, avoid handshake, observe social distancing, and avoid crowded places for their safety against the infectious disease.
