India: Losing job, woman marries and dupes three men, flees with valuables

A 27-year-old woman allegedly cheated several men on the pretext of marriage. The happened in the Indian state of Maharashtra. She was arrested on Saturday, following a complaint by one of the victims.

The accused was later identified as Vijaya Amrute. According to the Indian media outlets, she got held after a man, identified as Yogesh Shirsath of Sinnar, Nashik, registered a complaint against her, alleging that she fled with his valuables a fortnight after marrying him.

Preliminary inquiries by police revealed that Amrute, who is a married woman with a son, started the con of duping men on the pretext of marriage due to financial crisis after the pandemic-induced lockdown robbed her husband and her of their jobs.

A police officer said in the past three months, she allegedly duped three men after marrying them. She fled with valuables within days of marriage.

While confirming the matter, police said that Amrute first tied the knot with Shirsath and disappeared with ornaments a fortnight after the marriage. She then married another man, Sandeep Darade, a resident of Raogad’s Karjat. After this, she married a man from western Maharashtra and cheated him too.

Police also said that the woman is linked to a couple that looks for men searching for a bride. Once the marriage is finalised, the couple would take Rs2-5 lakh (Dh9,873- Dh24,682), which also included their fee and wedding expenses.

The alleged crime came to light only after Shirsath tried searching for Amrute and discovered that she married another man and fled with his valuables too. Based on his complaint, police initiated a probe, which led to the arrest of the woman.
