Karachi celebrates annual Sindhi Culture Day

Karachi: Karachi witnessed the usual zeal and fervour while celebrating the annual Sindhi Culture Day as various programmes were held to highlight different colourful and vivid aspects of Sindh’s centuries-old culture, civilisation, and language.

The tradition to celebrate rich and strong culture of Sindh was started in 2009 during the Pakistan Peoples Party’s regime in the province as since then first Sunday of December every year marks the day. The day also celebrates unity of Sindh.

The restrictions in place by the government against the spread of coronavirus didn’t come in the way of the Sindh Culture Day celebrations. People wearing traditional Sindhi cap, Ajrak (the world famous Sindhi shawl having unique block printing), and traditional dresses gathered in large numbers at various spots mainly in the downtown area of Karachi to celebrate the culture of their motherland. They danced to the folk Sindhi songs to show their affection for their native land.

Elaborate security arrangements were in place by the police for the programmes held to mark the Culture Day. Main events of the day were held at Fawara Chowk, Karachi Press Club, YMCA Ground, Sea view, at other beach locations of the city to celebrate Sindhi culture. Car and motorcycle rallies were also held to mark the day.

Similar programmes were also held in other cities and towns of Sindh like Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah, Larkana, Shikarpur, Duddu, Thatta, Ghokti, and Tharparkar.

One such main event in Karachi was held at the sprawling lawn of the historical colonial-era building of Sindh Governor House. Participants of the programme were briefed about history of the vibrant icons of the Sindhi culture. The folk singers on the occasion presented the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and other Sufi Saints of Sindh.

Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said that Prime Minister Imran Khan always remained concerned about development and prosperity of Sindh.

He said that the PM Imran Khan had recently unveiled a massive and historical package for development and progress of the capital city of Sindh. The PM in the same manner will unveil more packages for other cities of the province as well so that problems of their residents could be minimized with provision of maximum civic facilities.
