Karachi launches pilot project to electronically collect municipal taxes

Karachi: The Sindh Government has successfully rolled out a pilot project to launch a web portal-based service to electronically collect municipal tax at the district-level.

The pilot project has been launched in the District Central of Karachi that is the most populous district among seven districts of the provincial capital.

The pilot project is aimed at plugging the pilferage in collection of the municipal tax by the district administration.

The web portal-based system will be implemented in all districts of the province in a gradual manner.

The local traders and business proprietors in the area are given the opportunity free of charge to get registered with the web portal for payment of the municipal taxes to the District Municipal Corporation (DMC).

No new tax has been levied nor has the rate of the existing taxes been enhanced under the new system. The web portal will mainly facilitate the people to pay their municipal taxes.

Government elections

The pilot project has been launched after the Sindh government has given additional responsibilities to the deputy commissioner in the area as the administrator of the DMCs in Karachi till the next local government elections in the province.

Sindh Law and Environment Adviser Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who also acts as the spokesman for the Sindh government, said the new system had digitised the collection of municipal taxes so to stop pilferage of the revenue collected by the DMC.

He said the more revenue the DMC collected the more it would be in the position to do the public service. He said the traders of the area had started registering with the new system.

He said the newly launched portal had collected Rs 5.1 million taxes from the district in just a few weeks as against Rs 10.8 million municipal taxes collected by the DMC in the entire previous year.

He termed it a big achievement as each of the taxpayer had to pay a small amount as the municipal tax to the DMC.
