Cow goes on rampage in Hyderabad, kills one, injures four

Hyderabad: A cow went on a rampage in Hyderabad on Friday goring a senior citizen to death and injuring four others, including a veterinary doctor from Nehru Zoological Park who had come to help in controlling the rabid animal.

According to the police the incident occurred in Pahadishareef area of Hyderabad after the cow started behaving abnormally for a couple of days.

The cow, which mostly roamed around in the same area, started attacking passers-by days after it was bitten by a rabid dog.

Mohammed Khaja, 65, became the victim of the rabid animal’s attack and was seriously injured. He later succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. “My father had gone out for a walk when the cow attacked and gored him. He fell down with serious injuries and died,” his son Mohammed Moin said.

Four others injured by the cow included Mohammed Adbul Hakeem, deputy director Nehru Zoolgical Park, Hyderabad who was part of the team summoned to control the furious animal.

After attacking Khaja, the cow went into a thicket. Police personnel, members of Central Reserves Police Force and the staff of Jalapally Municipality began looking for the cow. Meanwhile, the team from the zoo led by Dr Hakeem arrived at the scene and spotted the cow at a distance. As he fired a dart at the animal to tranquilise it, the cow came rushing towards him and knocked him down. Hit by the animal the doctor lost consciousness and had to be rushed to a local hospital. He, however, recovered after some time. “In the past I have tracked and tranquilised dangerous animals like leopards and bears but never was I attacked like this”.

After being hit by the tranquiliser it took 30 minutes for the cow to become immobilised. It was later shifted to an animal shelter in the city.

“We have learnt that the cow had started running amok creating panic in the area after it was bitten by a rabid dog. The only possible explanation was that the cow had also turned rabid,” Dr. Hakeem said.
