Islamabad: The Hazara University of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in a bizarre move has introduced a dress code for the students, staff and faculty of the university claiming it would encourage the students to focus more on studies and less on clothes.
The measure would also end any discrimination among students on the basis of their financial background, says the university in its defence.
According to a notification issued by the University administration, the girl students have been advised not to wear tight jeans, T-shirts. They are also expected not to put on heavy makeup while at the campus. The dress code also includes restrictions on carrying expensive handbags or wearing jewelry by them.
The Hazar University Registrar issued the notification January 6 after a meeting of the university’s annual academic staff council. The rules will come into effect on Monday January 11, when the university reopens for students, the notification further says.
Dress code
After it was issued, the notification has been a subject of debate on national as well as social media and people are trying to figure out what goals exactly the university administration desired to achieve by setting dress code for students.
Sharifullah Wazir hailing from the Wazir tribe of the KP in a tweet has criticized the decision saying he failed to understand why the PTI government was radicalizing academic institutions. He has reminded the KP government as well as the university that it [radicalization of institutions] was not the first time but is systematically manufactured.
Hamadur Rehman another social media user has regretted that the elderly professors of the university are not concerned about the absence of a culture of research at the universities but their main worry is what kind of clothes boys and girls are wearing.
In the notification it has also been advised that the girls would wear clothes decently with shawl or abaya and also carry their identity cards along with them.
For the boys, the administration has banned wearing shorts, chappals, slippers, long hair, ponytail, earrings by the male students. The same applies for teachers and staff of the university.
Focus on studies
Spokesman for the KP government and Adviser to CM on Information Kamran Bangash justified the decision saying the dress code has been issued so the students focus on their studies.
He said the universities have been given powers to introduce decent dressing policy on their own.
“This will end the dress competition between the students and teachers, helping the poor students and their parents. It will also help them focus on studies,” said Kamran Bangash.
Hazara University PRO Shahid Rabbani said the university had enrolled over 10,000 students who came from different socio-economic backgrounds. The new code is meant to end differences based on students’ financial backgrounds, he said.
