Pakistan: Over 70% satisfied with government’s COVID-19 handling

Islamabad: A recently conducted Coronavirus Attitude Tracker Survey by Gallup Pakistan shows that majority of the Pakistanis have endorsed the steps taken by their government to check the spread of COVID-19 in the country and to provide medical and clinical help to those affected by the virus.

According to the survey conducted between October 21 and Dec 15, 2020 among 1,000 persons across the country, 73 per cent Pakistanis are satisfied with their government’s performance against COVID-19.

The measures taken by the Pakistan government such as enforcement of smart lockdown, closure of shopping malls, offices, transport, restriction of movement etc have received endorsement by majority of the Pakistanis.

This public trust in their government is 21 per cent more than the global public opinion about different governments and the country is 8th in 32 such nations where people have reposed trust in the authorities’ tackling of coronavirus.

Seven out of 10 Pakistanis expressed satisfaction while 23 per cent spoke against the government’s handling of the virus and 4 percent opted to reserve their opinion.

According to Gallup Pakistan, in the latest survey, an increase in the public approval has been recorded as during March 2020, 60 percent people had expressed their satisfaction, in April however it was 82 per cent, June 67 per cent, August 69 and September 70 per cent.

The survey is about changes in public perception, attitude and behaviour since the beginning of the lockdown in Pakistan and public response and behaviour towards COVID-19 initiatives and preventive measures; and the overall changes and impact of the lockdown on the daily lives of ordinary Pakistanis and businesses.

52 per cent satisfied

It has also given comparative analysis of Pakistanis’ opinion with citizens of 32 countries and it has been found out that globally, 52 per cent people have expressed satisfaction about their government’s performance against COVID-19 while 45 expressed disapproval.

Among those countries where people are supportive of their governments’ measures against the virus, Vietnam (99.8pc) comes first followed by China (99.1pc) and then India (87pc), South Korea (82.1pc), Denmark (78.6pc), Finland and Malaysia both (75.5pc) and Canada (74.9[c) and Pakistan (73pc).

Pakistan on Saturday reported 40 deaths and 2007 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last twenty-four hours after 40,898 tests conducted during this period. With these new figures the total numbers of cases in the country have surged to 499,517 while the death toll stood at 10,598.

The number of active cases in the country are still high i.e. 33,474 while 1,617 recoveries in the past twenty-four hours show the total number of recoveries have topped 455,445 mark.
