Sindh releases terminally ill prisoners

Karachi: The Sindh Government for the first time has set the precedent of releasing convicted prison inmates in the province purely on humanitarian grounds as they have been suffering from incurable diseases.

The Sindh Government’s Home Department has issued the notification to release eight convicted prisoners for a period of four months on the account of being terminally ill or suffering from incurable diseases.

The release of the terminally ill prison inmates was made possible as the Sindh government in 2019 adopted a new progressive law to manage the prison facilities in the province after replacing the 125 years-old Prison Act of the colonial era.

A probation and parole officer will supervise the period of the temporary release of the convicted prisoners in question who will submit a monthly report in this regard to Sindh Home Department.
