COVID-19: Pakistanis aged 65 and over to receive jabs in March

Islamabad: Pakistan has announced to vaccinate people aged 65 and above against coronavirus next month. “Inshallah will be opening up registration next week for COVID vaccination for those 65 years and above” and the registration for the second phase of vaccination will start in March, said Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar who is spearheading the country’s fight against the coronavirus.

Pakistan rolled out its national vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus on February 3 after receiving 500,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine, starting with frontline health workers.

At least 27,000 frontline healthcare workers have been vaccinated across the country in one week, according to the data by National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) which is leading the national effort to contain the pandemic. As many as 21,121 health workers have received the jab in Sindh, 4,458 in Punjab, 691 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 274 in Islamabad Capital Territory, 312 in Gilgit Baltistan, 239 in AJK and 133 in Balochistan.

Several vaccination centres and a new digital platform called National Immunization Management System (NIMS) has been established for the vaccination drive in Pakistan.

Queue-jumping concerns

After concerns were raised over queue jumping by elites and the politically connected, the NCOC officials asked the provinces to ensure compliance to the agreed guidelines. Only the healthcare workers “who are saving precious lives and registered in the resource management system by provincial health departments are authorised to be administered the vaccine in this phase of vaccination,” the official statement said, adding that “No one else is allowed to bypass” the digital system. Frontline health workers have been asked to check their eligibility by sending their national identity number to 1166 or by visiting nims.nadra.gov.pk website.

In a video released by NCOC, Pakistani doctors urged people to get the jab when it is their turn to be immunized. Dr Syed Farhat Abbas from Services Hospital, Karachi, says that he felt perfectly fine with no side effects even after five days of vaccination. Dr Shamshad of District Headquarters Hospital, Gilgit, advised all health workers to get the vaccine which is completely safe.

Pakistan recently approved Russia’s Sputnik-V COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use after China’s Sinopharm and the AstraZeneca vaccine. The South Asian country of 220 million reported a total of 559,093 COVID-19 cases and 12,185 coronavirus-related deaths since February 2020. Nearly 92.4 per cent people have recovered from the virus.
