Hyderabad: In a major recognition of spectacular success of an afforestation programme, Hyderabad has become the only Indian city to get the tag of “Global Tree City”.
The 431-year old city, once known as the city of gardens and lakes, has been included in the global list of 120 cities for 2020 jointly by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
The list includes the cities from 23 countries including from the developed countries USA, UK, Canada and Australia.
The honour came as recognition for the famous “Haritha Haram” (plantation drive) programme of Telangana state which has resulted in a significant increase in the green cover all over the state, specially in Hyderabad.
According to the certificate issued by the Foundation and FAO, 24 million trees were planted in the city of Hyderabad and Telangana state during 2020.
In a statement of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said that Hyderabad was selected for this honour for its commitment to growing and maintaining urban forestry.
Five parameters
According to the press release the city was evaluated based on the five parameters of establish responsibility, set the rules, know what you have, allocate the resources and celebrate the achievements.
“Hyderabad city is demonstrating leadership in management of its urban trees and is serving as part of the solution to many of the global issues we face today”, Arbor Day Foundation said in a statement.
Foundation president Dan Lambe described Hyderabad, with a population of more than 10 million, a part of an important global network leading way in urban and community forestry.
The international recognition of the success of the forestation drive coincided with a fresh initiative of planting ten million trees in the state to mark the birth day of the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
KCR had taken up the annual plantation driver “Haritha Haram” soon after he came to power in 2014 under which millions of trees were planted every year.
State’s minister for urban development K Taraka Rama Rao expressed happiness over the recognition of the efforts of the state government to increase the green cover.
“This is an acknowledgment of our efforts to improve green cover”, KTR said.
