India: Double decker buses set to return to Hyderabad after more than two decades

Hyderabad: Double decker buses, once a tourist attraction, are set to stage a comeback on the roads of Hyderabad.

Originally introduced by the Nizam’s Transport Services during the reign of the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan in the 1940s, double decker buses were taken off the road in the 1990s by Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation.

But now the prospects of their return have brightened with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) calling for tenders for providing 15 double decker buses for its Hyderabad operations.

Showing keen interest in the project, the TSRTC has also convened a pre-bidding meeting with interested parties for discussion on all the aspects of the project.

The tender notice said: “The bidder shall design, manufacture, test, supply and commission the above buses. The tenderer shall be well established and must have manufacturing and supply facilities of fully built buses in India”.

The speed with which the state government moved on the idea of bringing back the double decker buses has left many citizens pleasantly surprised. It all started with a tweet in November from a fan of double decker buses which set the ball rolling as it received instant support from the state’s industry and urban development minister K. Taraka Rama Rao.

On his Twitter account, a resident Shaker Hussain recalled the old days when double decker buses used to ply on the roads of Hyderabad and asked if the services could be started again.

It caught the attention of minister Taraka Rama Rao, an active user of Twitter who quickly welcomed the idea.

“I have many fond memories of riding the double decker bus on my way to St. George’s Grammar School at Abids. Not sure why they were off the roads. Any chance we can bring them back Transport Minister @puvvada_Ajay garu”, @KTRTRS minister tweeted.

It did not take long for the transport minister P Ajay to respond positively. “I shall talk to the MD TSRTC on this double decker buses possibility on Hyderabad roads”, he tweeted back.

Many enthusiastic citizens also took to social media hailing the initiative and recalling the old days when the buses used to ply on various long routes including Charminar to Secunderabad and Charminar to Mehdipatnam.

However, some people said that big buses would create hassles on already congested roads due to the manifold increase in city traffic.
