Thiruvananthapuram: In an agonising incident in Kerala, a six-year-old girl, adopted just a fortnight ago, lost her foster mother in a road accident.
Vallomkunnel M.P. Joy and his wife Sally who had no children, adopted six-year-old Jewel from Delhi only a fortnight ago. Joy and Sally had decided years ago that if their first child was a girl they would name her Jewel.
The accident occurred on the Ettumanoor-Manarcad bypass road in Kottayam district when Sally and Jewel were crossing the road. A speeding car hit Sally, 45, and the young Jewel only remembers that her mother pushed her out of harm’s way.
Sally’s final rites were performed at Cheruvandoor near Kottayam on Monday evening, as Joy tried to comfort the little child even as he prayed for his wife.
To add to Jewel’s agony, she speaks only Hindi, having been adopted from Delhi, and she only has her foster father to hang on to in an unfamiliar social setting.
Sally worked as a nurse in Bengaluru for some time, and when she got home to Kerala during COVID-19 shutdown she started a little shop that she named ‘Jewel Stores’.
It was only months later that Joy and Sally could complete the formalities related to the adoption, and return to Kerala from Delhi with Jewel.
Her new home was virtual heaven for the little girl as her parents showered her with love, and Sally tirelessly went around the homes of their family members and friends, proudly introducing their new family member.
It was during one such visit to a relative’s house on Sunday to introduce Jewel that tragedy struck.
The man who drove the car, identified as M.M. Ranjith, surrendered before police, and has been charged for causing death by negligence.
On an average Kerala witnesses over 4,000 fatalities in road accidents annually, and more than 40,000 are injured in road accidents every year.
