Pakistan launches vaccine drive from Islamabad

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Tuesday attended a ceremony that marked the formal launch of COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Pakistan.

The first vaccine jab was administered to a doctor. The prime minister oversaw the vaccine jab administration and wished its recipient the best.

While speaking on the occasion, he congratulated his health team for moving rapidly to secure the vaccines.

‘Thank you China

The prime minister also thanked China for donating 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine to Pakistan. We are thankful to China for the timely help, he said.

‘No preference’

He reiterated that the vaccine will be first administered to health workers working with COVID-19 patients, followed by the elderly in the high-risk age group. The vaccine doses, he said would be distributed among provinces equitably and there would be no preference in this regard.

The prime minister urged the people not to give up on wearing masks or following COVID-19 SOPs.

By wearing masks, we can prevent spread of coronavirus, he said.

Khan drew the attention of the audience to the US, the UK and other countries where their cities are completely locked down and life is yet to normalise due to COVID-19.

By God’s grace the situation in Pakistan is not bad and economy is going smoothly, he said.

Provinces to receive COVID-19 vaccine from Wednesday

Pakistan is set to begin the COVID-19 vaccination drive in all provincial capitals from Wednesday (February 3).

In an earlier tweet Tuesday, Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiative Asad Umar who is also Chairman National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) for coronavirus announced Prime Minister Imran Khan would attend a ceremony marking administration of vaccine.

The provinces he said would receive the vaccine doses from Feb 3 and the frontline health workers would receive the vaccine on priority.

A day earlier Pakistan had received first batch of Chinese COVID-19 vaccine Sinopharm.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Dr Faisal Sultan had received the consignment of 500,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine as a special Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane with the first tranche of Sinopharm vaccine landed here.

Pakistan on Tuesday reported 63 fatalities caused due to COVID-19 and 1,220 confirmed cases of virus in the last 24 hours.

The country’s toll after these fresh deaths has jumped to 11,746 while the total number of cases have surged to 547,648.
