Karachi: The Sindh government has completed a project to switch 227 primary health care facilities in the faraway areas of the province to solar power.
The Sindh government’s Energy Department undertook this project in 13 districts of the province where electric supply from the national grid is a difficult task. The project cost was around Rs 480 million.
These districts included Badin, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Dadu, Khairpur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Larkana, Nawabshah, and Naushahro Feroze.
These health facilities included government-run dispensaries, basic health units, rural health units, and mother and child health centres in the faraway towns and villages.
The project was started in July, 2020 and completed in January, 2021. The Sindh Energy Department also aims to energise through solar power primary health care centres and government-run schools in the faraway towns of rest of the districts. The project is aimed at cutting down energy bill of the Sindh government and to utilize the abundantly available renewable sources of energy in the province to produce clean electricity.
In a statement issued on the occasion, Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh said that Sindh had been far ahead than other provinces in the country to utilize alternative means of energy for electricity generation through environment friendly means.
Special focus
He said the Sindh government of Pakistan Peoples Party under the able leadership and guidance of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and former president Asif Ali Zardari had the special focus to expeditiously complete projects of alternative energy in the province.
He said that Sindh possessed the potential to fulfill energy requirements of the entire country including the electricity needs for the nationwide commercial and industrial activities.
Apart from this initiative, the Sindh government has also been undertaking the Sindh Solar Energy Project with assistance of the World Bank. The project has three main components: Construction of solar parks for utility scale clean electricity generation, utilizing the rooftops of the government-run buildings in Sindh for solar power generation, and providing 200,000 off-grid homes in rural areas of 10 districts of Sindh through solar power.
The Sindh Energy Department recently signed agreements with different vendors to install solar systems at 200,000 off-grid homes. The project is likely to complete in 2023.
