Pakistan President Alvi humbled by prayers for recovery

Islamabad: Pakistan President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday shared with the nation that he was feeling better after testing positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

In a post on his twitter account the president said “I am overwhelmed & humbled by good wishes & prayers, that I believe create a palpable aura of healing.” The president added he was feeling better as PM called sharing his experience and advised him rest, sleep & soup.

“PM to undergo test again”

Prime Minister Imran Khan who had tested positive on March 20 and since then is in quarantine, will undergo COVID-19 test as there are no symptoms now. According to PM House sources, officials from the National Institute of Health will take samples from Khan and the report will be available in the next six to eight hours.

“Finance, Defence Ministers test positive”

Prime Minister’s top aide on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak have tested positive for COVID-19 raising concerns about other team members of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pervez Khattak was infected with coronavirus on Monday while Hafeez Shaikh’s successor Hammad Azhar the new Finance Minister announced in a tweet about Shaikh testing positive on Tuesday: “Just found out that Dr Hafeez Sh has tested positive for COVID-19. I pray for his swift recovery and good health. Ameen.”

Pakistan government had announced a day earlier that Azhar would replace Shaikh as finance minister.

“Deadliest day in 8 months”

Pakistan reported on Tuesday 100 deaths in the last 24 hours which is a record high number of deaths for one day over eight months.

Earlier 93 deaths were recorded in one day on July 5, 2020.

The positivity rate remained above 8.8 per cent while the number of active cases in the country had surged to 48,566.

With the 100 new deaths and new cases, Pakistan’s total number of deaths rose to 14,356 while COVID-19 cases stood at 663,200.
