Karachi: The Sindh government has said that its drive is on to cut the number of stray dogs in Karachi and the province without committing any act of animal cruelty.
As lethal dog bite cases are frequently reported in Karachi and other parts of the province endangering particularly the lives of children, the Sindh government said that vaccination and sterilisation were the two important features of its drive against stray dogs.
Sindh Local Government Secretary Syed Najam Ahmed Shah said that over 30,000 stray dogs had been vaccinated against rabies in Karachi alone.
He said the rabies prevention programme of the Sindh government being implemented at a cost of Rs 900 million had entered a new phase. Modern equipment, operation theatre tables, vaccine, motor vehicles, ID chips, and medicines were being purchased to prevent further increase in the population of stray dogs in Sindh. He said that three treatment centres for sterilisation of dogs were operational in Karachi.
