Islamabad: Pakistan’s fatalities due to COVID-19 have crossed the 20,000-mark as the country reported on Friday 102 deaths during the last 24 hours.
After this addition in the death toll, the number has risen to 20,089.
According to the National Command & Operation Centre’s (NCOC), during the last 24 hours, 51,528 tests were conducted of which 3,070 were reported positive.
The total number of cases in the country has climbed to 893,461 while the positivity ratio is 5.95 per cent.
Still there are 63,229 active cases of COVID-19 in the country while after 6,021 recoveries reported in the last twenty-four hours, the total number of recoveries in Pakistan stand at 810,143.
5 million doses
According to the NCOC, the vaccination process in Pakistan is in full swing and by Thursday, May 20, more than 5.151 million doses, both the first and the second, had been administered.
More than 1.193 million people have been fully vaccinated (both doses), while 2.631 million have been administered the first dose of vaccine, the data further reveal.
The Pakistan government is starting vaccination of the 30-year and above persons from Saturday (May 22). Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiative Asad Umar in a tweet Friday announced this in a tweet on Friday.
In today’s NCOC meeting it has been decided to open up vaccination for 30 years and older starting tomorrow.
The messages for those who are being scheduled will go out today, said Asad Umar in a tweet..
The federal government in order to ensure a smooth education process after reopening of schools and colleges and for safe holding of examinations, has decided to vaccinate teachers and support staff on a priority basis.
According to a spokesperson of the Federal Ministry for Education the decision has been taken in consultation with NCOC.
The move aims at ensuring smooth working of schools once coronavirus cases come below 6 per cent, said the spokesperson.
Support staff
He said that the government had decided to support the education sector through the targeted vaccination of its teaching and support staff.
According to the plan, all teachers and invigilation staff are required to get themselves vaccinated ahead of the upcoming board examinations.
Non-vaccinated staff will not be allowed in examination halls, he said.
The ministry of education has approached the NCOC to assist respective provincial and local governments for speedy vaccination of teaching and support staff.
