Sindh retains COVID-19 restrictions following rise in cases after Eid

Karachi: The Sindh government has decided to retain all lockdown restrictions imposed in the province before Eid Al Fitr against the spread of coronavirus due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

The decision to this effect was reached as the provincial Task Force on coronavirus met here on Thursday with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in chair.

The decision taken by the provincial Task Force was in contrast to the steps announced by the National Command and Operation Centre a day earlier. The NCOC decided to relax some of the lockdown restrictions. The NCOC decided to allow open air marriage ceremonies and outdoor dine-in facility at the restaurants. The NCOC meets with Federal Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar in chair.

The provincial Task Force was informed that 20,421 coronavirus tests were conducted in Sindh in the previous day that was a record number. Out of these 20,421 tests, 9,000 were performed in Karachi alone.

The participants of the meeting were briefed that 2,076 new positive cases of coronavirus had emerged in the province as the result of these 9,000 tests as this shows 10.2 per cent positivity ratio in Sindh. The coronavirus positivity ratio of Karachi stands at 16.82 per cent.

New cases

Sindh CM recalled on the occasion that Eid Al Fitr was observed in the country on May 13 as on the Eid Day 1,232 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the province.

He mentioned that these statistics showed that coronavirus cases were on the rise in the province. He said that it seems quite difficult for his government to relax the lockdown restrictions.

Other participants of the Task Force advised the CM to further tighten the lockdown restrictions in the province if necessary.

The CM directed the Task Force members to review the coronavirus situation in Sindh and put forth their recommendations in this regard.

The Task Force will meet again on May 22 to make decision as whether or not there was a need to further tighten the lockdown regime in the province. The representative of World Health Organisation will also attend the next meeting and present their proposals to this effect.
