Telangana registers 10,000 COVID-19 positive cases in one day

Hyderabad: Breaking all previous records, Telangana has recorded more than 10,000 COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours.

An official bulletin issued by the state Health Department on Tuesday said that there were 10,122 positive cases in the state while 52 deaths were recorded.

A total of 99,638 tests were conducted during the period. The spike was sharp as it was 35% higher compared to the previous 24 hours, officials said.

While the state capital Hyderabad topped with 1,440 cases, Nizamabad and Khammam have also emerged as the other hotspots in the state.

Despite such a grim situation, officials said, the people were still not strictly following the COVID-19 protocol and gathering in large numbers.

In a single incident in Nizamabad, where 400 people attended a wedding, more than 80 people have tested positive.

The total number of active coronavirus cases in the state have gone up to 69221, officials said.

In Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) in Hyderabad, reports said dead bodies lay in corridors and open spaces. TIMS spread over 9 floors in what was earlier Sports Village has 700 patients, most of them in ICU, but had only two workers taking care of the process of handing over dead bodies to the families. “Now it is reduced to mere one as the other person has also tested positive,” sources in the TIMS said, explaining why so many dead bodies were piling up.

This runs in the face of claims of the state government of low figures of death. Official statistics of daily deaths have met with disbelief among the general public who point out the unusually high number of funerals at different places across the state.
