Islamabad: Pakistan achieved a significant vaccination goal by administering 525,168 vaccine doses in a single day on June 12 amid fears of a deadly fourth wave of coronavirus pandemic.
“For the first time, we crossed half a million doses of vaccination,” said Minister Asad Umar in a tweet on Tuesday. Umar, who heads the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), which is leading the pandemic response, said that the pace of vaccination would continue to increase in the coming days.
Pakistan aims to vaccinate 70 million eligible people by the end of 2021. The country of 220 million has so far administered 20.5 million doses as of July 13. Around 4 million Pakistanis are fully vaccinated while 16.4 million have received one dose of the vaccine.
The country has so far received more than 23.6 million doses of different vaccines including Sinopharm, Sinovac, CanSino, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna.
Pakistan reported 1,590 new COVID-19 cases and 21 fatalities during the past 24 hours. With the new stats, the country’s number of overall confirmed cases has now reached 976,867, including 914,605 recoveries. The virus has claimed 22,618 deaths in the country.
The country eased most of the COVID-19 curbs after a gradual decline in daily cases and deaths by mid-June. However, there are now reports of a looming fourth wave of the pandemic fuelled by the contagious delta variant of the virus which experts say is behind the sudden spike in new infections in the country.
The government has reintroduced smart lockdowns in high-risk areas as well as travel restrictions and announced that to seek all possible administrative support including the army’s help to ensure enforcement of coronavirus rules, said Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan.
Health officials have warned that there are “clear early signs” of a fourth wave of the coronavirus in Pakistan and advised people to follow precautionary measures especially during Eid Al Adha to avoid stringent measures and lockdowns.
