One and a half years later, India’s 1st COVID-19 patient tests positive again

Thiruvananthapuram: India’s first COVID-19 positive case, a medical student who had arrived from Wuhan in China in her hometown in Thrissur last year, has tested positive a year and a half later, reports said on Tuesday.

According to medical authorities, she took the COVID-19 test as she wanted to fly to Delhi. Much to everyone’s surprise she tested positive. According to the authorities, she is yet to take her first vaccine shot.

The authorities said that there was nothing to worry about and she is asymptomatic as of now. After her return from Wuhan, she has not gone back and had been continuing her classes online, from her home.

India reported 31,443 new cases in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest in the past 118 days and 2,020 deaths, said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Tuesday.

This is the 35th consecutive day when India reported less than 100,000 new cases.

The active cases have now come down below 500,000. The country has 4,32,778 active cases presently and has witnessed a total of 4,10,784 deaths so far.

According to the Union Health Ministry, a total of 49,007 people were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total discharge to 3,00,63,720 till date.

On July 6, India recorded 553 deaths -- lowest since April 6. This was after May 23 when India saw a record fatalities with 4,454 deaths in 24 hours at the peak of the second wave.

The first death in the country due to the pandemic was reported in March 2020.
