Islamabad: The city administration of Gwadar has announced a complete lockdown in the district for 15 days to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The announcement comes amid another spike in coronavirus cases in Pakistan fuelled by the contagious Delta variant.
All shops, hotels and restaurants will be completely closed for the next two weeks starting July 25, according to the official notification. However, all essential shops would be allowed to function.
All leisure facilities including parks, beach spots and playgrounds will also remain closed in Gwadar, a port city in southwestern Balochistan province. During the next two weeks, all tourists and visitors are prohibited from entering Gwadar - known for its scenic seashore and emerging as a tourist destination with recent developments under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Since many residents depend on fishing for their livelihood, the officials have announced that a limited number of fishermen would be allowed as per an agreement with the fishermen association. However, only those fishermen who are vaccinated would be allowed to go for fishing. All fish markets would also remain closed during this period.
On July 23, Pakistan passed the grim milestone of 1 million cases of COVID-19. At least 32 deaths and 1,841 new cases of infection were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s tally to 1,001,875 people infected. At least 22,971 have lost their lives to the coronavirus in the country. Pakistan has so far administered 24.9 million vaccine doses.
Minister Asad Umar, who is the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) chief, has said that Pakistan has the lowest COVID-19 deaths per million but warned that the danger is still looming over the country, urging people to get vaccinated soon.
