Criminal case lodged against Karachi residents for protest against civic officials

Karachi: A criminal case has been lodged with the police against residents of a posh locality in Karachi for protesting against the civic authorities.

The demonstrations took place after civic infrastructure was damaged during torrential rains in the city last month.

The residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) assembled in large numbers at the offices of Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) - the civic agency of their posh neighbourhood - on August 31 for a peaceful protest. They protested for hours against the near collapse of the drainage and sewerage system of their area after the heavy rains.

The residents demanded urgent improvement in the civic conditions of the area as their homes and streets were badly damaged in the floods.

The CBC lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Darakhshan Police Station of the area against 22 residents of the DHA for what it called an act of violent protest at its offices. According to the CBC, a few dozen people present among the protesting residents of the area resorted to violence and damaged the property of its offices, and interfered with discharge of the official duties by the cantonment officials, including relief work in the rain-affected areas. The FIR also states that the residents scuffled with the security guards deputed at the entrance of the CBC office. It further states that the protestors shouted slogans against the CBC officials and through their violent acts caused harassment and terrorised the area people.

“I reached there at the CBC office on the day after some delay at 1pm after the protest started. Except the use of abusive language against the officials by some of the protestors, I didn’t notice any other act against which a criminal case could be lodged,” said Sharfuddin Memon, president of Defence Society Residents’ Association.

Memon said that he would raise the issue with the authorities and would demand to immediately withdraw the FIR as the protest at the CBC offices was peaceful. He said that there was no cause to lodge a criminal case with the police as the residents had already been worried due to the damage to their homes after rains.

Meanwhile, officials of DHA and CBC held a meeting with the representatives of the area and agreed that no fee would be charged for renovation and repair of homes in the locality in view of the damage caused by heavy rains. The officials also held out the assurance that proper drainage system would be constructed in the area where it is missing.
